Where to get plans

School systems

Some schools require you to upload plans before or after each lesson. Now, this sounds like a pain but on the plus side, if you are covering the same topic this year then it gives you a good starting point . It is also a good way to familiarise yourself with the schools’ system of plans as each school will vary. It is always best to check with your class teacher first to see if it is okay to use the plans and if they are still up to date.

Do make sure you upload (if asked) your own plans so that others can use them too.

Other teachers

You won’t be able to rely on other teachers forever but as a student, I would highly recommend seeking out the subject specialist in the school to ask them for advice on planning and to see examples of excellent lessons.  Most subject specialists will be keen to share their knowledge but be mindful that they are taking time out of their busy day to help. Always ask well in advance and be flexible when you are able to meet.

The internet

I hesitate to add this category as there are so many appalling websites trying to charge you money for poor plans. You need to be hyper vigilant when it comes to using plans you found online and always ask other teachers for their recommendations in regards to good websites.

I knew several student teachers who did not want to use pre-made plans as they felt it was lazy. Each to their own I suppose. My view was that pre-made plans are a good crutch to with as they are usually written by very experienced teachers who have perfected the art of lesson planning more than I have.  You should always adapt any plan you get anyway(even those from the schools own system) to suit your class. Using pre-made plans gave me loads of new ideas for teaching lessons that I wouldn’t have thought of myself had I not used them.

Another great place to gain support and ideas is though Facebook groups. I joined one for primary MFL which I found very helpful as there were very experienced teachers willing to share ideas. You will find groups based on subject, age phase and even year group.
